Atheist “coming out” Party

February 18, 2012

"The intent is to unify, energize and embolden secular people nationwide, while dispelling the negative opinions held by so much of American society … and having a damn good time doing it!"

... from Atheists bill big names for 'coming out' party in capital, on msnbc.com.

This event is going to be called the "Reason Rally".

I can't help but wonder - who exactly will they reason with?

There's an open invitation for reasoning - should they choose to accept it.
It's been open for thousands of years.

Isa 1:18 “Come now, let us reason together,”
says the LORD.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,

Think they'll take that invitation?

No - not likely.

So - who's the headliner?

Headliner for the Reason Rally is Richard Dawkins, a British evolutionary biologist and author who has been an especially scathing critic of creationism and the "intelligent design" theory embraced by some Christians.

Oh well - there's goes any hope for that reasoning invitation from God being accepted.

You know - I see the words evolutionary biologist in that sentence.

Earlier this week, I was handed a pamphlet at work for a product that was being demonstrated to us to consider for purchase. It was the second generation of that product. For for the sake of this article - let's say the product is called widget-abc. The pamphlet is titled the evolution of widget-abc.
Evolution of a product? Really?

If we take evolution to mean what Richard Dawkins would want us to believe it means - then this product would have somehow modified itself to be a new / improved second generation widget-abc. That would truly be amazing.

It's also not true. The evolution of the second generation widget-abc was very carefully designed and controlled - by the engineers that work on the product.
In fact - their quality control system is undoubtedly very carefully designed and controlled to ensure that there are absolutely no deviations from the design / production model that the company has in place for the widget-abc.

Uh-oh.

So - what does evolution actually mean?

For the answer to that - let's look at dictionary.com.

The first definition is:

any process of formation or growth; development

The examples given are:

the evolution of a language; the evolution of the airplane.

I have to say - words don't just pop into a language. When there's a new word - someone has to have actually said it first - then it gets into popular use - then it becomes part of the language. Words don't just show up in the dictionary on their own.
In the case of the airplane - that's another extremely well designed & thought out process that's very carefully controlled.
There's no randomness - none of the "evolutionary" type of things that the evolutionary biologists talk about.

So - let's check out the second definition:

a product of such development; something evolved

With the example being:

The exploration of space is the evolution of decades of research.

Talk about a controlled process of growth and development where randomness isn't allowed!

So where does this evolutionary biology comes from?

That'd be the next definition:

Biology. change in the gene pool of a population from generation to generation by such processes as mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift.

Note the word Biology in front of the definition. This is the way it appeared on the site. Biologists use a "special" definition of this word for themselves. It doesn't mean the same thing to them that it means to the rest of us.

To everyone else - the word means - or at least is supposed to mean - a controlled developed process leading to change.
The biologists are the ones that introduced randomness into the word.

Now - most of us don't even know what the word was originally intended to mean.
The word has been very successfully hijacked and now means something quite different to different segments of the population.

I hardly think that the producer of widget-abc wants to say that there randomness in their product caused by poor quality control on the manufacturing line or untested additions put in just because someone felt like it - or by mistake.
The same is true for airplane manufacturers.
It's maybe even more true for space exploration, where tolerations / deviations of fractions of an inch could be the difference between a space ship coming back to earth or being hopelessly out of control.

Some may argue - it's still development - it's still "growth" - it's still a change.

True enough.
But - what's missing is the element of control.

To the other fields mentioned - (not only mentioned, but mentioned first - indicating the more "correct" / common usage) - the element of control is absolutely essential.

Here's a little homework for you.

Check out the evolution of life - according to Darwin. (There are plenty of resources for this - I leave it for you to find one, so as not to have someone think I'm intentionally leading to any one site out of bias.)

Then check out the creation of life - according to the Bible.

Ge 1:20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

Ge 1:24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Ge 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Ge 1:27 So God created man in his own image,

in the image of God he created him;

male and female he created them.

Ge 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Ge 1:29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

What you'll find - is that there's is little to no difference (depending on your source for evolution) - other than who gets the credit.
For some reading and sources on this topic - you can start at this page on Theistic Evolution.

So - in the end - that's what it's all about: who gets the credit.

In every field except biology - the credit for things evolving is given to the ones who are making the changes - directing them - controlling them - making sure they work - Etc.

In biology - the credit is given to no one. It's taken away from the One who is in control - God - and given to no one.

Ultimately - that's what this coming out party is all about as well.

From the web site on the rally, we see why they are doing this:

The purpose of this particular rally will be to advance secularism (in the broadest sense of the word) in society.

Just in case you don't know the definition of secular -

of or pertaining to worldly things or to things that are not regarded as religious, spiritual, or sacred; temporal: secular interests.

Back to credit - in this case giving it to "the world" - meaning anything that's not religious.

Also from the web page on the rally, we see their statement of Richard Dawkins -

Dawkins is very honest about his feeling that/ (sic) religion and science are incompatible — and that science is superior to religion — and that’s just one reason we’re thrilled to have him speak at the Reason Rally. He has done more for our cause than just about anyone else — convincing many theists of the power of science — and I’m sure people at the rally will appreciate what he has to say.

To say that "religion and science are incompatible " - is to say something that isn't true. It's a result of having rejected God's invitation to "reason together".

To say that "science is superior to religion" is to take it a step further - it's taking away credit from the One who deserves it. Not only that - it's a slap in the face of God.

To be one about whom it is said - "He has done more for our cause than just about anyone else" is possibly true.

To be one of those who listens to him and comes away believing him - that's most unfortunate.

In the end - Richard Dawkins will be dead and judged the same as us.

In the end -
we'll be judged by the God he refused to reason with -
we'll be judged by the God he so vehemently says is incompatible with his way of viewing science -
we'll be judged by the God who created the laws of science - and who so carefully controls them - and from whom Richard Dawkins could have learned so much more.

One can only pray that Richard Dawkins - and those who he convinces that his secular evolutionary biologist point of view is correct - realize before it's too late - that they are wrong.

Remember that verse from Isaiah - the one where God invites us to reason together with Him? Here's that sequence in it's entirety - where we see what happens to those who resist and rebel against the invitation -

Isa 1:18 “Come now, let us reason together,”
says the LORD.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.

Isa 1:19 If you are willing and obedient,
you will eat the best from the land;
Isa 1:20 but if you resist and rebel,
you will be devoured by the sword.”
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Oops - that doesn't sound so good.

Later in Isaiah, God says that every knee will bow before Him.
Let's see how that turns out -

Isa 45:22 “Turn to me and be saved,
all you ends of the earth;
for I am God, and there is no other.
Isa 45:23 By myself I have sworn,
my mouth has uttered in all integrity
a word that will not be revoked:

Before me every knee will bow;
by me every tongue will swear.

Isa 45:24 They will say of me, ‘In the LORD alone
are righteousness and strength.’ ”

All who have raged against him
will come to him and be put to shame.

That's not looking so good for the secular / evolutionary biologist crowd either.

Not good at all.

So - where does this leave them and their coming out rally?

I'd say - for one thing - coming out isn't really necessary - at least not as far as God is concerned.
He already knows.

I don't normally take words out of context - but for this one I'm going to. The entire parable is in Luke 16:1-15 . The key words that I'm going to take out are -

God knows your hearts

It's not really necessary for people to come out against God. He already knows they're against Him.

Going a little further - there's also this from 1 Samuel 2:3 -

1Sa 2:3 “Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,
for the LORD is a God who knows,
and by him deeds are weighed.

This verse is directly aimed at those like Richard Dawkins who would use their own pride to make themselves higher.

One final word - again from Jesus - regarding those who would lead people away from God -

Mt 18:1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

Mt 18:2 He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Mt 18:5 “And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

Mt 18:7 “Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!

Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!

Going back to the opening of this article -

"The intent is to unify, energize and embolden secular people nationwide, while dispelling the negative opinions held by so much of American society … and having a damn good time doing it!"

The bottom line then -
the goal of this coming out rally is clearly to either turn people away from God -
or to strengthen the feelings of those who are already against Him.
and to have a
damn good time doing it!

All I can say is - be careful what you ask for.

Remember - Mt 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you?
This isn't what Jesus had in mind when He said these words -
but if one so blatantly asks to be damned - it's likely going to happen.

At this point - I'm sure there are many Christians who are not happy with this rally.
Some may even be upset by it.
To them - as to all Christians - I close with these words from Paul to the Romans in the section titled "Love" in the NIV -

Love

Ro 12:9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Ro 12:14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

Ro 12:17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;

if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.

In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

Ro 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Pray for them - and the souls they think they don't have.
